Trading One Substance for Another: Replacing Alcohol With THC

February 4, 2025

Musical icon and recovered addict Sir Elton John recently commented on the legalization of THC, the intoxicating element in cannabis.

He thinks legalization is a mistake, characterizing THC as addictive, mentally and physically disorienting, and a gateway to the misuse of other drugs.

Cannabis, commonly known as marijuana, is legal in many states, although Indiana isn’t one of them. Many people believe replacing alcohol with THC is safer, viewing THC as less likely to cause overdoses.

However, today’s THC is much more powerful than the pot Americans experimented with in the 1970s. Recreationally, you can have bad symptoms or overdose with THC.

What Does THC Do?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) works on the cannabinoid system, part of our body’s nervous system.

Medical scientists have limited knowledge of it. There’s been little research into the cannabinoids’ effects on our brains or nervous systems. But as more states legalize cannabis — and medical and recreational use increases — research is being conducted rapidly.

Replacing alcohol with weed offers benefits to some, such as:

Therapeutic cannabinoid modifiers will undoubtedly be developed in the future to bolster these benefits.

Is THC “Better” Than Alcohol?

Even without definitive THC research, users shouldn’t assure themselves it’s a perfectly safe alternative to alcohol.

Both THC and alcohol come with risks and perceived rewards, depending on the individual. In certain scenarios, alcohol is more dangerous than THC; in other situations, THC poses a greater danger.

Just because alcohol is approved for consumption doesn’t mean THC deserves approval, too.

As Sir Elton noted, THC can be abused:

  • It may affect judgment and cognitive function.
  • It may spur weight gain because it increases appetite.
  • THC overdose is possible.
  • THC may even carry a risk of contamination that alcohol doesn’t, including spiking with fentanyl.

An Individual Decision

Besides considering THC’s illegal status in Indiana, the choice to use is an individual one. You have to know yourself, your risks, and your vulnerabilities.

Some people are prone to alcohol-induced problems; others may stop after a drink or two. The same is true for THC. For some, it may be easy to cut off; for others, it could be a gateway to deeper drug use.

On the other hand, THC may prove a productive way to process PTSD or induce anxiety-busting sleep.

Let’s Find Alternatives

It’s human nature to sample various substances to achieve higher levels of sensation or numb unpleasant experiences. If you’re considering replacing alcohol with THC (for example, if you have kidney issues and can’t imbibe), how do you make an informed decision?

Whether you use THC, alcohol, or nicotine, “everything in moderation” is a good rule to follow:

  • Be transparent — tell others about your substance use. No positive outcomes happen when you mask a behavior.
  • Have an accountability partner (your spouse, friend, doctor, etc.) to keep you on the path of moderation.

Instead of debating the pros and cons of THC and alcohol, focus on enjoying your best life without relying on substances.
